SŌLitude Lake Management® Volunteers at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank

As part of our outreach initiative, The SŌLution, the SŌLitude Lake Management team organized and prepared 470 bags for the BackPack program during our first volunteering visit. We organized bags to contain high quality items such as canned tuna, granola bars, pasta, canned vegetables, and cereal, that are delivered to seven Hampton and Newport News, Virginia schools on Friday of each week. The bags of food are anonymously “stuffed” into the backpacks of identified students in need. The food helps these families through the weekend. The schools that have been qualified to receive these bags of food are Title 1 schools where at least 50% of their students are qualified to receive reduced cost or free lunches.

“After our first morning of volunteering and learning of the need of food for these children through the holidays, our entire team agreed we needed to help again,” said Tracy King, Director of Marketing. “As an extension of our company core values, The SŌLution instills us to be good corporate citizens. However on a personal level, I think we all felt especially accomplished in our work and these experiences will drive us to do more.”

During our second volunteering trip, our group was needed in the warehouse to help with holiday preparations including organizing turkeys for pick up, creating Thanksgiving dinner boxes, sorting grocery store donations into bins and also preparing BackPack program bags. The Virginia Peninsula Foodbank has a greater need for food in the BackPack program near the holidays when children are out of school for extended periods of time for holiday breaks. The SŌLution is a corporate outreach program to encourage volunteerism, activism, outreach and fund-raising both inside and outside of SŌLitude Lake Management.
